RIDGELAND SMOKING BAN

The recent Ridgeland smoking ban is a positive development for that city and it's a concept that's taking off across the state and nation. Starkville, Tupelo, Oxford, Hattiesburg, and now Ridgeland have all passed smoke-free workplace laws that include restaurants and bars.

I've never been a smoker, but I've had loved ones who smoked and the second-hand smoke is a real problem. Smokers have a right to practice the habit in their own homes and vehicles, but I have a right not to have to endure the smell, the fumes and breathe those toxins into my lungs.

It's also clear to me that smoking restrictions are good business. Less than 25 percent of the public smokes and the rest just don't like to be around it. This is one political debate in which Mississippi moms have tremendous influence and should use it to help create healthier communities.

I agree. Smoking is something you chose to do and I chose to not smoke or be subject to sit in it while I eat.

Here, here. I HATE going in restaurants where people are smoking. You always smell like an ashtray when you leave, and just feel so dirty. That's one thing I miss about Tupelo. They had just adopted a smoking ban when we moved.
Guess you just have to be careful about where you eat in this area. :(

One thing I've never understood; why is the non-smoking section always in the back of the restaurant? It's like they don't want the smokers to have to fight their way through all of that clean air to get to their section.

Who knows, maybe having part of my lung cut out because of secondary smoke has made me a little testy.
